Abstract

A direct stability formula to calculate the factor of safety of homogeneous earth slopes is proposed. Accuracy is considered to be better than 95 per cent. The formula has been developed by means of regression techniques from published dimensionless data, which are based on the limit equilibrium method. It is shown that the same formula simplifies the calculation of the probability of slope failure. In addition, the formula simplifies the procedure to determine the required extent of laboratory testing on a theoretical and statistical basis.

A new definition of the probability of failure is used in this paper. This yields more reasonable results than the traditional definition. This definition makes it possible to use the normal or Gaussian distribution to determine the probability of failure.
