Abstract

Different methods for the direct re-use of urban effluents are discussed. An analysis of data for the Witwatersrand and Cape Town indicates that the reclamation of purified sewage and its re-use together with source water in a closed recirculation system can increase the overall quantity of water available to consumers substantially over and above the natural water supply. In addition the final waste water stream will be dramatically reduced, its total salt load will be reduced and the incremental unit cost of the increased supply to consumers will be competitive with that of water from additional fresh water sources.
