Abstract

This paper reviews the annual report of the town engineer (1901 to 1932) and city engineer (1933 to 1990) of Johannesburg. The first section deals with the early years of the mining settlement and the problems encountered in dealing with stormwater runoff, especially after heavy rain. It outlines the measures taken to cope with these problems, including canalization. The second section covers the period from 1940 to the present. It deals with growing problems of inadequate finance and difficulties encountered as suburban sprawl took place. Initiatives to tackle stormwater runoff problems in the 1980s are outlined.
