Abstract

The 'method of scenario supposition' described provided a framework of reference for the evaluation of ground-surface stability on dolomitic land and required that hypotheses be made regarding the probable impact of man's activities on the dolomitic karst environment during the lifetime of a development. The characterization process resulted in the classification of stability in terms of the risk of sinkhole and doline formation. Factors for the characterization of risk and the associated terminology were defined and proposals were made concerning appropriate development in relation to identified risk categories.
