Abstract

This article analyses the distribution of the modal enclitic άν in the homilies by John Chrysostom. The main question is whether άν has narrow syntactic scope (i.e. belongs to the verb syntactically) or wide syntactic scope (i.e. belongs to the clause syntactically). I argue that the clues provided by its distribution (mainly its tendency towards P2 position) seem to point in the direction of the wide scope analysis.
