Abstract

Education and vocational training in prison are the main preconditions for a successful integration of ex-prisoners into society and the prevention of recidivism after release. There are many projects to improve the education of prisoners and most of them are practised with financial support of the European Union in the European Member States. In this regard the following subjects will be discussed :

  1. The main international legal instruments concerning the education of prisoners
  2. A view on education and training in general and on the effectiveness of the education of prisoners in relation to their resettlement in community
  3. Some of the research results found recently in three Dutch prisons concerning the prisoners' views and experiences with education, vocational training and work during the execution of their prison sentence
  4. Some results of the experiments with multi-media and e-learning in prison.
