Abstract

South Africa has insufficient infrastructure to cope with the growing tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, with extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) now adding to increasing numbers of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) patients. The CSIR has set out to address the lack of appropriate hospital infrastructure to prevent cross-infection - a key constraint in the effective treatment and rehabilitation of patients.
