Abstract

The existence and the growing usage of Tsotsi-taal as the language preferred by many young people poses a challenge to the field of Bible translation. This awakening brought forward this article and the consideration of having a Bible translation in Tsotsi-taal, since it is not yet available. An empirical study that sought to explore the views and attitudes of young people was done in the vicinity of Ikageng (Potchefstroom). A synopsis of the Bible versions (King James Version, Greek UBS 4 and Tsotsi-taal translation) of a short passage from the letter of James 1:19-25 was made. This synopsis was then read to ten young people (male and female) and listened to their views towards the acceptability of the Tsotsi-taal translation. The results indicated that a higher percentage of young people had no problem with Tsotsi-taal translation of the Bible. This means that a serious challenge is posed to the field of Bible Translation, to have that Bible translated into Tsotsi-taal in order to reach the "Millennials" with the saving Word of God in the language they prefer best.
