n Ekklesiastikos Pharos - Warfare in the chronicle(s) of Ioannina : some critical remarks : research article

Volume 95, Issue 1
  • ISSN : 1018-9556

This article examines the depiction of warfare in the two versions of the Chronicle of Ioannina, thereby concentrating on aspects which have been neglected, overseen or misinterpreted in previous studies, such as these of Synkellou, Ziagkos, Soulis and Nicol. Thus, we analyze the terminology of war, used in the Chronicle, as well as the context of 'international' and local warfare, the type of soldiers and warriors employed, the Malakasaioi invasions on the Ioannina Lake, the fortifications, the taxeis in a war context and the Chronicler(s)'s views on or assessment of warfare.
