Abstract

The narration of the events, conditions and circumstances that occurred in Thessaloniki during its siege and conquest by the Ottoman Turks in 1430, have been meticulously documented by a contemporary witness, the Orthodox monk Ioannis Anagnostes. Besides his highly important factual information, broadly used by modern historians, his text also provides direct and indirect evidence on social relations and interactions. Based on the analysis of these elements, this article discusses the cultural and social differentiations, which Anagnostes has presented in his text, in the framework of the disastrous circumstances of 1430.
