Abstract

As China's former one-child policy, introduced in the late 1970s, is now being formally phased out, the country may be well positioned to support global dairy demand as the result of an unexpected increase in future birth rates and infant food demand. While the policy was being enforced, population growth was only 0,4% per year compared with 1,15% for the rest of Asia. It is predicted that China will achieve an annual population growth of 0,8% in the long term.
