In the current academic climate in which universities see themselves as global entrepreneurs it is difficult to envisage that when Margaret Hewett was a student, Latin was an automatic choice for the best students. This is neither the time nor the place to discuss the merits of the study of Latin, but it is apposite to point out that this Festschrift, dedicated to Margaret Hewett, symbolises the end of the traditional approach to academic studies - a ""paradigm"" in today's educational parlance.
