Abstract

This paper outlines theoretical approaches that form the basis for an examination of the interdependencies between »Africa« and the »North«. While Scandinavian countries have never been colonial powers, they are perceived, and present themselves, as »humanitarian superpowers«, spending large amounts on development aid, mainly in Africa. The paper illustrates the connections between the two regions, using the examples of the representation of Scandinavian colonialism in the Congo in a recent Norwegian novel and of Africa in Swedish economic relations.
