Abstract

The city as a topos and genre in literature is a product of modernism as well its most important metaphor. By taking account of the motif of the city as it was first developed in modernist literature, this paper critically investigates the portrayal of migrants in the city in migration literature. It is shown that the portrayal of migrants as marginalised figures adds a new dimension to the subgenre of literature of the city.
