Abstract


In this article the play by Roland Schimmelpfennig, one of the most successful contemporary German playwrights, is analysed as a diagnosis of the current relationship between the so-called Western world and Africa. Even though its form is that of a well-made play in the tradition of , Africa is always present as the dividing experience between the two couples (the personage of the drama). It is the central moment of interruption as well as of reflection. This is present in the whole drama on many levels, culminating in the play of the dolls Peggy Pickit and her African counterpart, representing the children of two different worlds.
