Abstract

In the first section of this paper Ranke's philological-critical or hermeneutic-individualising method of "understanding" is explained, which is closely related to the human sciences. This method is contrary to the analytical method of "explanation" which from the Enlightenment ran through Positivism to the present-day French Annales School and is closely related to the social sciences. Collestivistic group phenomena of a supra-individual and structural nature affecting the modern industrial society compelled the historian to extend his method with a view to include "understanding" as well as "explanation" without sacrificing the identity of history. Today history is not only a human but also a social science. The clash between South African historians since the seventies has rather been one of direction than method.

Geskiedenis is vandag sowel 'n geestes- as sosiale wetenskap.
