Abstract

A study of psychosocial factors that characterized hypertensives in Lagos, Nigeria, was undertaken, with the use of five psychological tests, namely the modified version of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, Hypertension Symptoms Checklist. Attitude to Hypertension Scale, Ezeilos Semantic Differential Scale for Self Concept, and Type A Behaviour Pattern Scale. A test- retest and validity study of the instruments used was carried out, in a study before the main study. A normative study of the local population was also carried out. A chisquare analysis of the demographic variable showed significant difference between the two groups only on marital status, type of employment and position on the job.
