Abstract

Bio-degradation is degradation through composition of starch-based products. Oxobio-degradation is degradation by accelerated reduction in molecular weight to a level where micro-organisms consume the item. Oxo-degradability refers to a two stage process - oxidation followed by bio-degradation. The oxidation phase is brought about by the action of the pro-degradant catalyst in the presence of oxygen and accelerated by heat and light. It is controlled by antioxidant additives. The process brings about a controlled oxidative breakdown of the plastic.
