Abstract

At the turn of the new millennium, and having spent most of the previous decade with Standard Bank's economics division, I was invited to speak at the first Pan African Banking and Finance Summit in Johannesburg. There, I shared my views as to why an African renaissance would fail. At that time, four issues came to mind - political stability, a lack of foreign direct investment, a failure to educate not just our children but our adults as well, and a failure to embrace computer technology within our schools and develop computer literacy across the board.
