As a 10-year-old growing up in a dusty township outside Pietermaritzburg, the young Naren Bhojaram pondered the inequalities of a society that provided basic services for some and not for others, as he drew water from the communal standpipe. From these roots developed a passion to be involved in the betterment of society, which led the young Bhojaram into a career in civil engineering. After obtaining his honours degree, he spent the first five years of his working life with the Pietermaritzburg Municipality Engineers Department, designing bridges and structures, especially of the water-retaining kind, and developed an interest in water and wastewater projects.
