Abstract

The traditional classroom can't stay the same and change is needed. Classroom activities where face to face teaching is the dominant method, is not the most effective delivery method when a learner-centered approach is followed. The learning experiences of students can be greatly enhanced by introducing a blend of delivery methods that complement the learning material and the students' involvement. When compiling the blend of methods it is important to carefully select methods that suit the content and the aim of the learning activity. It is therefore essential to analyse the present learning situation to implement the most effective blended solution. One of the elements of the strategic plan of the Central University of Technology, Free State is to facilitate and enhance access for all students. This implies that a student must freely have access to learning material and learning activities. Using only one delivery method restricts access. Blending more than one method can also create confusion for a student. The need for a management tool is obvious to give structure to the blended solution. With WebCT activities and learning material are electronically available to the student. The lecturer facilitates the learning process by using the WebCTTM platform to guide the student through the learning experience. Face to face delivery is enhanced and managed by the electronic technology facilities of a Learning Management System (LMS). The purpose of this paper is to descriptionbe how a LMS can be used effectively as a management tool to change the traditional face to face learning experience to a guided learning experience where the student is central in the learning process.
