People have tried different ways to make machines intelligent. One option is to use a simulated neural net as a platform for Genetic Algorithms. Neural nets are a combination of neurons in a certain pattern. Neurons in a neural net system are a simulation of neurons in an organism's brain. Genetic Algorithms represent an emulation of evolution in nature. The question arose as to why write a program to simulate neurons if a program can execute the functions a combination of neurons would generate. For this reason a virtual robot indicated in Figure 1 was made ""intelligent"" by developing a process where the robot creates a program for itself. Although Genetic Algorithms might have been used in the past to generate a program, a new method called Single-Chromosome-Evolution-Algorithms (SCEA) was introduced and compared to Genetic Algorithms operation. Instructions in the program were changed by using either Genetic Algorithms or alternatively with SCEA where only one simulation was needed per generation to be tested by the fitness of the system.

A concept CPD framework, to be implemented by medical technology workers, was compiled and needed to be evaluated by professionals. The aim of this survey was therefore to use the Delphi technique as a research tool to evaluate the concept CPD framework by a widely distributed group of medical technology workers. The Delphi technique is a research tool organizing group communication in gaining consensus among a panel of experts. A monitoring team co-ordinated and evaluated the Delphi process in response to the feedback received by a panel of experts. Panellists are selected for their contribution to the topic under investigation. They do not normally interact with one another during the Delphi rounds. Fifteen panellists, distributed throughout South Africa, participated. The panellists were knowledgeable about medical technology and CPD. During the three Delphi rounds, statements were added, moderated, rephrased and rated. This resulted in a final CPD framework that consisted of 71 statements, completed within the three months scheduled time frame with a very high percentage co-operation of the panellists. The Delphi technique was an ideal tool for evaluating the concept CPD framework among a widely distributed group of medical technology workers.

A pilot programme was run (2004-2005) with Tourism Management students at the Central University of Technology, Free State to enhance the satisfaction levels of both the student and relevant employers during Experiential Learning. The goals were to try and better prepare students for their Experiential Learning experience by means of a formal orientation programme in addition to the normal briefing session held and to enable both students and employers to achieve higher satisfaction levels in terms of pre-determined aspects as a result of the programme. The pilot programme was based on and informed by theories of learning in cooperative education, best practice requirements as well as a study of possible benefits to all parties concerned.

This paper tries to find answers to the question concerning the availability of suitable technologies to accommodate the teaching and learning of mathematics by means of the World Wide Web. It addresses three standards for the presentation of content mark-up and touches on the importance of adequate browser applicability with respect to MathML as one of the standards. Various tools for rendering MathML on the web, as well as plug-ins and extensions and other combinations of technologies, are discussed. The paper concludes with the introduction of a dynamic mathematics object model (DMOM) by Robert Miner from Design Science Inc. Requirements for a DMOM are formulated and its implementation is discussed.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the application of Radio Frequency Identification, RFID, to automatic student attendance register. The aim is that the students in any class can be recorded when they carry their student cards with them without having to individually swipe the card or allocate special interaction time. The successful implementation of this proposal will facilitate such record keeping in a non-intrusive and efficient manner and will provide the platform for further research on the correlation between attendance and performance of the students. The opportunity for related research is identified regarding the range of the parameters involved, ensuring that individual identifications do not clash and interfacing challenges with the central record keeping are overcome.

The current debate within the ASGISA and NEPAD policy structures of the South African Government is to enhance E-service delivery via Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for all citizens. This paper deals with the problem how ICT in governance may be constructed to facilitate greater accountability, transparency and reducing corruption through better financial, public information management, procurement and administrative systems. South Africans especially in rural areas have a limited access to ICT. The main barriers to ICT access relate to high cost of Internet access, connectivity problems, lack of technical skills to support maintenance and low number of computers with Internet connectivity at schools, libraries and other public places.

The paper presents a critical review of the techniques that are used to cool plastic injection moulds. It examines research on cooling of injection moulds by conventional cooling, the benefits and the limitations of the method. It compares the deployment mechanisms that have been proposed by various researchers. It also examines how the various mechanisms affect the plastic cooling rate and the overall heat transfer performance of the mould and how the various deployments affect the stress distribution of the mould and mould durability. The paper also presents the possibilities that have been presented by rapid prototyping. It discusses the development of conformal cooling as an alternative to conventional cooling. It presents the state of the art on the method. The paper presents the deficiencies in the current theories on conformal cooling and suggests areas that require further work in order to fully exploit the technique.

Although much work has been done on the society versus business relation issue, it has yet to cascade business social responsibility (BSR) to small ventures and especially rurally based ones where survival is a more pertinent goal. Most studies to date have focused on corporate and large organisations, thereby suggesting that BSR is not really a small business issue. A major consequence / cause of this apparent bias towards large business is limited research into how small ventures and especially rural ones perceive and apply BSR. This study proposes an instrument for measuring BSR in small ventures. Through empirical analysis the resultant instrument was found to be valid for measuring small business BSR and measured four dimensions thereof namely : Expected benefits; Community / customer practices; Realised / actual benefits, BSR awareness / attitude and employee practices. Through discriminant analysis, the identified factors of BSR are useful to classify ventures as high or low sales and profit performers, suggesting that information on a firm's BSR activities can be used as indicators of firm performance.

The political and social transformation process in South Africa is forcing organisations to avoid the sensitive, unpleasant and potentially volatile behaviour at workplace that can arise when groups or individuals who differ work together or come into close contact with each other. Therefore, management developed a corporate culture which creates an environment that is conducive to performance improvement, shapes the way people act and interact, as a result, this culture influences how things get done. The corporate culture encompasses the organisation's goals, business ethics and dominant ideologies. Based on the results of this study, these cultural changes ought to be driven by the fact that employees respond to the way in which the organisation treats them. The research aims to investigate the impact of organisational culture on the gold mining activities. The impact of organisational culture is demonstrated through a sense of identity and unity of purpose by the members of the organisation, commitment of employees to their work and existence of strategies and programmes which provide guidance on what is expected. The premise is that organisational culture determines socialisation, power relationship, policies and procedures, reward systems, communication systems and ideology, all of which have a significant impact on the day to day experiences of all employees.
