Abstract

In this collection John Mateer returns to a South Africa both radically different and familiar from the country he has left. He explores experiences and memories within shifting contexts. In a country where race is no longer the determining factor to identity, the title functions both as a liberating statement and an ironic comment on contemporary attitudes towards identity. Moving between the difficulties in acknowledging shifts and recognising the unchanged, the poems reflect on the legacy of white identity and experience from varying distances.
