Abstract

"What country, friends, is this, Illyria or Port Elizabeth?" The answer comes through quite clearly in Paige Newmark's witty and engaging production: "Port Elizabeth, lady." The play adapted remarkably well to its setting in the Eastern Cape in 1850, although it is quite doubtful whether Sir Andrew Aguecheek would have survived in a settler community, even as a visiting knight from the Mother Country.
