Abstract

In fiction, the word 'sheriff' has become synonymous with a gun-toting cowboy wearing a starred badge in an ostensible quest to uphold justice and order. In modern society, sheriffs' roles are mostly limited to the service of certain legal documents. But, in reality, are technological advances not stripping sheriffs of their guns, badges, and delivery satchels?
