Abstract

The Silvermine Valley has always been strategic to Cape Town’s South Peninsula, and historic sites and structures in the valley date back to the earliest era of European settlement in the Cape. The location of the earliest of these sites, the “Agter die Steenberg” look-out point, established in 1676, is believed to be on the southern slope of the Steenberg Mountain, just above the Noordhoek Manor retirement village. From this elevated position one of the men herding cattle in the area would have been able to give advance warning of ships approaching the coastline at either Fish Hoek or Noordhoek.
