Like every visitor to Cape Town I was awe-struck by my first sight of the immensity of Table Mountain and the jagged edges of Devil’s Peak. Generations of artists have been inspired by the view of the town, nestling below the dramatic mountain backdrop, bordered by the deep blue of the Southern Atlantic. Over the centuries, following Bartholomew Dias’s rounding of the Cape in 1488, it was also the fabled landscape that greeted travellers arriving by ship who had been at sea for many months.
