Abstract

Drawing borders and crossing borders: Belonging as category of literary analysis

This paper examines the question of how literary texts discuss belonging and if they foreground the particular emotionality of belonging. This analysis of Lukas Bärfuss’s novel Hundert Tage, Jenny Erpenbeck’s Gehen, ging, gegangen and Michael Roes’ Weg nach Timimoun shows the different types of belonging that exist, while also showing the emotional modes that connect them.1
