Abstract

Felicitas Hoppe – of criminals, losers and the quest for truth

Felicitas Hoppe has been addressing the question of truth for some time without providing definite answers, rather provokingly evading it by breaking all rules regarding time and space. The relationship between the two in literature is to unfold in such a way that both elements are complementary to a force field without negating one of the two. In Hoppe’s seemingly playful handling of time(s) and place(s), these elements are historically and culturally redefined. Calling herself a “travelling writer"” whose narratives move freely not only in space, but also in time, she leads the reader into “another, open space, in which we can at least approach [...] visualization.” In placing the past and the present side-by-side, Hoppe creates a world, which provides the stage for an interaction between times, spaces and presences, including herself and the reader. The article deals with Hoppe’s time-travel-stories Verbrecher und Versager and her most recent book Prawda.
