n South African Journal of Cultural History - Good Hope ─ South Africa and the Netherlands from 1600, Martine Gosselink, Maria Holtrop & Robert (Eds.) - book review

Volume 32 Number 1
  • ISSN : 1011-3053

The historical relationship between South Africa and the Netherlands has left a tangible cultural legacy in South Africa, not only in the form of the Afrikaans language, but also in the Cape Dutch architecture, Roman Dutch law, religion, food, song, dance and art, and most importantly, in its people. This publication was the catalogue for the Good Hope exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands, from 17 February to 21 May 2017. It also forms part of the Rijksmuseum Country Series, which explores Dutch colonial rule in eight countries (including South Africa), with whom the Netherlands shares a common cultural heritage, and is published by the Rijksmuseum History Department.
