n South African Journal of Cultural History - The Thirstland Trek, Nicol Stassen - book review

Volume 32 Number 1
  • ISSN : 1011-3053

Dr FJN (Nicol) Stassen is a famous historian and a seasoned publisher. Indeed in no way can any zealous reader be dissapointed by this bulky work. It tells the unique and at times breathtaking expedition of trekking people in almost biblical numbers and proportions. About 700 Afrikaans speaking men, woman and children over a period of about seven years confronted the hot and dry regions of North West Transvaal, through the current Botswana and Namibia, eventually to settle around Humpata in Angola. The book also provides valuable contributions in the field of genealogy and cultural-historical ways of life such as trade, transport, culinary habits, as well as church life and a spectrum of civil life including contact with various peoples and languages.
