Abstract

Over the past decade, poaching and wildlife trafficking have devastated wildlife populations around the world. Environmental threats, such as climate change, deforestation and other forms of habitat destruction, have also had a large-scale impact on ecosystems. Given the combined effect of the conservation crime threats of poaching and wildlife trafficking – not to mention badly managed legal trade in wildlife – they have the potential to drive many species to extinction in the very near future. This situation is being further exacerbated by the involvement of organised crime in the illegal wildlife trade.
