Abstract

In 2007, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), pursuant to its powers under s 39 of the Copyright Act, issued the Copyright (Collective Management Organisation) Regulations 2007 (CMO Regulations) which repealed the Copyright (Collecting Societies) Regulation 1993 (1993 Regulations). In repealing the 1993 Regulations, the NCC expanded its powers to regulate collective administration of copyright in Nigeria by inter alia making extensive provisions relating to the internal mechanisms or corporate governance of collecting societies. These corporate governance-related provisions discussed later in this paper, marked a turning point in the regulation of collective management of copyright in Nigeria.
