Part historical survey, part a playwriting guide for the contemporary moment, this book is based on Sarah Grochala’s PhD study completed at Queen Mary, University of London. The study hones in on the politics of form, examining how dramatic structure in British plays has been, and is being, used, and how this correlates with contemporary British society. It is an acute study that is historically and theoretically well grounded, and although Grochala’s focus is on British work, this is a book for anyone involved in making, writing or thinking about theatre, and it is likely to have a particular resonance with South African playwrights and theatre-makers.
