Abstract

2018 has been a difficult year for engineering and development in South Africa. The so-called new dawn has not really arrived yet, but there are indications that this might just be getting out of the starting blocks. I was fortunate to have been able to attend conferences in both Zimbabwe and London this year. From discussions at these events it is worth noting that the problems we face in South Africa are really very similar to those faced by our colleagues in other parts of the world. Such challenges concern matters ranging from corruption to poor maintenance practices to gender and diversity issues. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also becoming a major focus point for our actions going forward. There is a definite realisation that engineers should be fully involved in these solutions, and that they should also communicate far more effectively regarding the problems facing the world.
