Abstract

Category: Technical Excellence

By October 2017 the storage levels of the main dam supplying the Maputo area in drought-stricken Mozambique had dropped to 20%, and Day Zero was looming. MOZAL Aluminium Smelter, which is the largest industrial employer in the region, producing more than half a million tonnes of aluminium a year, uses 1 400 m3 of water a day, so to stay in operation in this dire situation the smelter urgently required a constant and reliable supply of water. The challenge was to find a flexible strategy that would ensure uninterrupted operations at the smelter, but that would not lock MOZAL into long-term technology or financial obligations for what is in essence a short-term, cyclic problem.
