Abstract

The price gap between genuine and counterfeit goods is so vast it’s created a global market for knockoff products. While some consumers favour copies of luxury fashion items, fake pharma and personal care products can be life threating. Fake or substandard medicines are the cause of thousands of deaths, many of them African children, who, according to the World Health Organization, are given ineffective treatments for pneumonia and malaria. While developing nations seem to suffer the most from this illicit trade, the problem is global.
