Threonine is the second limiting amino acid in pigs fed maize and soya bean-based diets, and is primarily responsible for protein synthesis within the body of the animal. However, threonine also plays a crucial role in the immune system of pigs as well as in maintaining the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) through the production of mucins. These are glycoproteins that are present on the surface of the small intestine and are responsible for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity.
