Abstract

The plant genus Capsicum originated in South and Central America, and records show that people began eating them about 9 500 years ago. Five species are cultivated today, and these will be described in the following issues. Many more ‘wild’ species, currently of no economic importance, are kept in seed banks for possible future use.
