The one matter about which all South Africans agree is that rolling blackouts such as we experienced during March are causing untold damage to the economy and are the bane of our collective existence. There is, however, no such collective consensus on how Eskom can keep the lights on. “Eskom is blaming the current crisis on diesel shortages and transmission lines from Mozambique’s Cahora Bassa project being damaged in a tropical cyclone” (“SA sick of being kept in the dark”, Financial Mail, 21 March 2019).
