Globally, two-thirds of the population live in areas experiencing water scarcity, and water demand is beginning to exceed supply in many regions. In South Africa, 98% of available water resources have been allocated, with 77% of this comprising surface water. In the face of growing and competing demands, water reclamation and reuse is gaining momentum as a reliable way of augmenting supply. However, Jeremiah Mutamba, manager: Water-Centred Knowledge, Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority, questions whether South Africa is doing enough to manage the potential water deficit it faces.
