Abstract

An investigation into the resilience traits of Dennis Boks in the context of a historically disadvantaged community

Residents of historically disadvantaged communities sometimes have a fatalistic attitude (a negative and helpless feeling according to which given outcomes and things/events cannot be avoided). Overwhelmed by formidable poverty-related influences, it is often a massive challenge for them to achieve success in life. A large percentage of South Africans display visual signs of the demoralising effects of this privation (Landsberg, Kruger and Swart 2016:52). Residents are frequently confronted by a lifestyle characterised by a wide array of negative issues in the community. Nel, Nel and Hugo (2016:3) emphasise, in particular, the high rates of unemployment, gang-related activities, drug and alcohol abuse by parents and the high rates of HIV/Aids as well as vandalism, illiterate parents, various home languages and a lack of sufficiently trained teachers in terms of learning support and adequate support services. Poverty also often manifests in the form of high dropout rates, teenage pregnancies, low academic performance and tertiary education (Adhikari 2004:172). Poverty’s consequences are far-reaching in many ways. Acosta, Chandra and Madrigano (2017:ii) indicate that the long-term interpersonal financial challenges that people and communities experience can affect individuals, communities and institutions socially and physically. The consequence of this is often a culture of individual and collective apathy that can further paralyse such communities physically, emotionally and socially. Given these environmental challenges, it is logical that for many it is an uphill battle to work towards upward mobility.

Yet there are examples of people who succeed; people who managed, in the midst of the most challenging life circumstances, to work towards a better life and a successful career. It is clear that these communities are in dire need of stories of hope, stories that inspire which may act as a catalyst to shift people’s mindset towards what is possible to attain great heights regardless of difficult socio-economic circumstances. One way of offering hope, inspiration and future expectations to people in historically disadvantaged contexts is to share success stories of those who, as Moseneke (2016:xx) puts it, were able to jump the fence of poverty and rise above it to make a success of their lives. These stories of success can become the story of many children in similar circumstances. I found one such a person, someone who was determined to rise above his circumstances and worked tirelessly to do so despite terrifying circumstances at home. His name is Dennis Boks. He was born in Vanrhynsdorp and is currently a regional magistrate in Oudtshoorn.
