According to Photius (Bibl. 153a), Ptolemy Chennos, a fascinating but rather obscure writer, active sometime between the reigns of Nero and Hadrian, recounted an aetiology of the Leucadic Rock in the seventh book of his pseudo-mythographic treatise called Paradoxical or New History. The cliff was situated somewhere near the entrance to the Underworld and many people who were vexed with erotic passion leapt from it into the sea, thereby freeing themselves from distress and life at the same time.
