Abstract

Garden history as an academic field of study is a severely neglected historical genre in South Africa. This happens to be even more so the case with black and coloured people’s garden history. Therefore, the history of gardens and gardening in Bloemfontein’s (Mangaung) oldest locations, namely Waaihoek, Kaffirfontein (sic), Cape Stands and the No. 3 Location, may be considered a hidden history. In-depth archival research revealed that the residents of the mentioned locations managed to lay out food-only gardens, ornamental-only gardens and food-and-ornamental gardens on their small plots, despite drawbacks such as economic deprivation and inadequate water supply. They were supported in their efforts by key municipal officials who saw gardening and beautification as an important part of the Bloemfontein municipality’s efforts to improve the layout and aesthetical appearance of Bloemfontein’s locations.

’n Verskuilde geskiedenis: Tuine en tuinmaak in Bloemfontein (Mangaung) se oudste lokasies

As akademiese studieveld is tuingeskiedenis ’n erg verwaarloosde historiese genre in Suid-Afrika.
