We live in an age where we constantly want to know “why?” We search for some form of tangible answer to explain certain phenomena in the hope that it will enhance our understanding and by consequence make us feel less helpless. There are however those instances where we are absolutely stumped and the elusive why yields confusion. Eating disorders in all forms seem to fall into this confused category. We want to blame the mother daughter relationship, the pressure from the peer group to be thin, bullying around one’s weight, social media and all its sequelae, a potential trauma or familial conflict, an excessive need for control, a desire to remain a child forever or an excessively negative body image; because surely if we can pinpoint its exact cause we can fix it.
