Abstract

Hope for integration? European Perspectives on Refugees from Africa: Language(s) and culture(s)

This article discusses the controversial positions in the current debate on integration of foreigners into German society. Is there hope for a successful integration or have political (and financial) attempts for foreigners’ social and vocational integration failed? For more than ten years, the law has required immigrants and aliens permanently living in Germany to learn German. Therefore, special language and integration courses are being offered to them. However, funding for these programmes has been reduced which turned out to be a mistake during the so-called refugee crisis in 2015 and 2016 when nearly one million refugees poured into Germany. As the number of African refugees will continue to increase, the following chapter argues for new ideas and supporting measures to deal with the problem of their integration into European societies. Starting with an analysis of the causes for the current situation, the paper gives a survey of the facts and figures of immigration policies with special reference to African immigrants, their needs, their requirements, and their perspectives, leading to a socially-engaged plea for more vocational training. It concludes by outlining the specific conditions for a better integration of Africans into European, especially German, societies.
