„As if we were criminals.“ On precarious lives and the treatment of refugees in Abbas Khider’s Ohrfeige and Julya Rabinowich’s Dazwischen: Ich.

The first part of this contribution critically interrogates the parameters that led to the so-called refugee crisis in Europe, and its designation as such. This is followed by an investigation into the way Judith Butler’s theorisation of precariousness and precarity can illuminate the way refugees in Europe are perceived in public discourse, being assessed as either victims, a threat or as heroes. Consequently, legal and human rights issues, as well as social mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, are given prominence by the question as to whether these refugees can be integrated into European societies, and if so, how. In the second part, it is argued that literary texts participate in the public discourse on the refugee crisis, either in a satirical manner, by rejecting the possibility of the integration of refugees into European societies (as evidenced in an analysis of Abbas Khider’s novel Ohrfeige), or in creating empathy with the plight of refugees (as an investigation of Julya Rabinowich’s youth novel Dazwischen: Ich demonstrates).
