Abstract

The University of Pretoria (UP) has seven campuses as well as a number of other sites of operation, and thousands of students frequent these campuses and sites on a daily basis. Since student safety is a main priority, the University of Pretoria has introduced various safety initiatives and have cooperative role-players who assist with the safety of the students. One role-player that endeavours to make the Hatfield area, where the UP's main campus is located, a safer space is the Hatfield City Improvement District (CID) organisation. This CID is a non-profit organisation that is funded by the 26 property owners located within this suburb in the east of Pretoria. The main aim of this CID is to ensure that all people residing in Hatfield are safe and they therefore outsourced this task to two private security companies, namely G4S and JC Security. Security officers are deployed 24/7 within the Hatfield CID area and there is also a security contact point at the corners of Hilda and Burnett streets in Hatfield. The Hatfield CID has installed CCTV cameras to monitor the streets of Hatfield on an ongoing basis, while a partnership with the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) ensures the presence of a Bicycle Unit in the Hatfield CID. This student community now also has a 24-hour TMPD satellite police station which was opened at the beginning of November 2019.
