Abstract

Having a single national organisation to represent everyone in agriculture will always be a pipe dream. There are just too many ideological and political differences playing in the same sandpit. Even an umbrella organisation, such as the Agriculture Sector Unity Forum (Asuf), is unlikely to succeed due to too many policy differences on issues such as land and water reform. This was the view of the leaders of South Africa’s national agricultural organisations when asked about the future of organised agriculture in our country (read the feature article in this issue). It is clear that a functional rather than a structural unit is the future of organised agriculture. Issues of common interest will likely be addressed through a network of partnerships, rather than by pressurising structures to merge or subscribe to a majority standpoint.
