A herd of ten young Charolais heifers found a new home at Stella High School in 2017. Julian Fincham, an agricultural teacher at the school, wanted to foster a love of agriculture among the pupils by improving their practical agricultural education. The result was the Charolais Cattle Breeders’ Society of South Africa donating the Sterland Charolais herd, which is part of the Veeplaas Schools’ Herd Project. This combined school, which celebrated its 101st anniversary this year, boasts approximately 350 high school and primary school pupils. Julian teaches agricultural management practices as a subject. He says the school uses youth shows to introduce pupils to animals and management practices.
